Viceversa significa scambiarci l’operato.

L’elettricità, i dischi.

+ Into the Gro(o)ve. “Ghost of the Golden Groves” / review

Leonardo Persia: You are a duo of filmmakers. I would like to know how you share your directorial work.

Harun-Al-Rashid aka Aniket Dutta & Roshni Sen: A large part of it is pretty organic for us with our shared values of culture, politics and cinema itself. Having said that, there is a lot of ideation and exercises that go into the process of film making in general and when there are two filmmakers, it’s both easy, and hard. Easy because of shared responsibilities, and hard because of intrinsically different approaches to perhaps the same artistic vision. So we make it a point to individually self-reflect. Also when one of us comes up with a concept, usually accompanied by free-flowing thought, the other works on the narrative and the audio visual aspects accompanied by streamlining, and an analytical approach, and vice versa.

Does vice versa mean that you try to make rationality fluid, letting it be a bit untidy?

Vice versa means that we exchange the exercises between us. When one is fluid the other is more rational. So we basically try to cover both ends.

This is very interesting, because also the respective characters of your film in two episodes are divided between opposite ends, culture and nature. The first was written by Aniket Dutta, the second is an adaptation of a short story by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay. But the stories are equivalent, each mirror of the other. Was the first episode conceived considering the novel?

No. However, while writing The Polymorph, where we see a ruthless side of the forest, we also wanted the forest to behave on the other side of the spectrum. As our first protagonist, the city-bred, educated Promotho, is eliminated because he is a symbol of the machinery, and man-made “progress” which ultimately leads to dystopia, we thought of second protagonist who could be his polar opposite, someone more attuned to nature. “Maya” which we had already read, provided exactly that in the character of the cook who is fluid and can fit into any environment because of his wandering soul and curious, contemplative nature. The forest shows him a different perspective of life where he learns to co-exist with a bunch of dystopian beings from the future. Also, although Maya starts off as a seemingly pulp Bengali story, a genre we grew up reading and wanted to give tribute to, there are hints of both a dark psychological horror, and sci-fi elements which we elaborated on through the dystopian creatures. In the original story, there was no direct reference to the future or dystopia, but it is a very layered story which we wanted to explore further. There was no direct reference to the future or dystopia in the original story, but it is a very layered story which we wanted to explore further.

The novel was written and takes place in the 30’s. But, by some details, your film seems set in the 50’s or 60’s. Some directors of Japanese New Wave are mentioned. There’s a scene when you can listen to a Brazilian song of 1964, but in a modern version of 2001. That song is recorded on a vinyl LP and played on an old gramophone. Surely you mixed different periods.

It was set in the 60s because it was the decade when postmodernism gained prominence in art, literature, and cinema which arguably was a reaction to the WWII – the whole idea of “meaninglessness” got a new meaning as seen in the Theater of the Absurd for instance and a “new wave of cinema” in various countries – we chose the Japanese New Wave not just because of its particular stark black & white imagery that we are so fond of, but because of its direct connection to WWll. So while this is the premise or setting of the film, the mix of periods is primarily to do with the narrative where the future and the past collide in an effort to uproot the seeds of dystopia which was nestled in deforestation in the name of industrialization. Secondarily, one can see a mix of periods in our attempt to create a pastiche of different genres of films that have influenced us which as such didn’t have anything to do with the main narrative itself.

It seems that your film pays tribute to certain goods almost accessible to all at that time. Electricity, records. Then, as you said, there’s the matter of the technological innovation and its negative side . Promotho has to build roads in the forest.

Things that you mentioned such as electricity, records weren’t accessible to all, especially in rural Bengal, the geographical location of the film. So if you watch a film set in the 60s in such a location, you’ll never find a character like our cook playing western records. But we wanted to break away from that archetype which was justified in the story with the hint of him stealing the records from his previous employer. As far as Promotho is concerning, he building roads is a pretty straight up representation of machinery taking over nature.

In your film cinema has been evoked by some elements like light, dark, technological reproduction. And, looking back, by some kind of ritual theatre, with its masks, and a very dynamic painting on the walls.

Filmmaking itself is a technological reproduction of art and one needs to be ever critical of the mode of production of any content. “The medium is the message”. In other words, the “medium” of cinema itself, like any other technological medium, and not just the narrative, stories etc. (the content within) has been changing the collective unconscious. Therefore, we’ve attempted to create and break these various stylistic devices to literally address this “message”. A simpler way of doing this would be to have characters discussing these ideas in a film but they would just be words and wouldn’t really justify the medium or the message.

Looking back further, there’s the act of dreaming. Dreaming is like shooting a film. Dreaming, we can imagine characters, stories, and for them create points of view, camera angles.

Filmmaking is like dreaming in the sense of the collective unconscious which is shaped by archetypes. Our intent was to deconstruct such archetypes through film. In another sense, the entire film has a dream-like attribute with a purposefully elusive narrative to depict our age of hyper-reality where truth is simulated. Often, ironically, through the audio visual medium itself by acting as a simulacrum and blurring the lines between reality and fiction. We can sense this more prominently in this Covid scenario where one seems to have a physical sensation of dreaming it all. Please understand that we don’t mean this in the sense of “oh my God, the covid situation is a nightmare” but a very lucid dream. One can argue that as the entire material world has been disrupted, the collective unconscious has also been altered, at least at a microscopic level, and this lucid dream is actually a sensation of the awakened – an alcoholic’s moment of clarity – awakened, if only briefly, from this state of hyper-reality.

In your film sound and music have an important role, they result definitely cinematographic. I know that you, Aniket, are a musician. So, how much influence does cinema have over music and vice versa?

I think they are in tandem. Sights can’t be processed without sounds and vice versa. Even when it’s dark you see that darkness on screen and when there’s silence you hear the minute sound waves. And a film is just that – Sights and sounds (at least in pre VR/AR cinema). But in this particular context we had the “vision” of putting jazz, blues with synth pop on one hand to incorporate the confluence of different periods, the collision of the past and future, and on the other hand to question and deconstruct the above mentioned established archetypes in this particular sense through electronic music in a 60s rural Bengal setting.

I believe you make a sort of post-cinema. In addition to the exploration of the more ancient past, you use the modernity as conceived after cinematic experience – digital video-art, video-clip, meta-cinema.

Well, post-cinema is a very loosely defined term but we’ll try our best to address your question. Some of these elements belong to post-cinema, as you said. As in the specific stylistic (video-art, video-clip etc) and narrative (meta-text) elements – references of a character in the film referring to the fact that the audience is watching a black and white film; the paintings on the wall of the hut which is a miniature representation of the first episode itself etc. But other than that post-cinema, as a whole, is a reaction to the contemporary period of hyper-reality and post truth, with its unique, contradictory power of being both the simulacrum and a critique of the simulacrum.

What kind of cinema do you like?

We like many sorts of cinema. Starting from the trashiest of B movies to Maya Deren. Not elaborating on this here as there’s also so much we dislike in between and then there’s the lot which is in between likes and dislikes. Discussing all of this will definitely take away from the topic of this interview.

by Leonardo Persia

Shonajhurir Bhoot (Ghost of the Golden Groves)
Screenplay & Direction: Harun-Al-Rashid (Aniket Dutta & Roshni Sen) • Producer: Indrajit Roy • Co Producer: Roshni Sen & Aniket Dutta • Cinematography: Basab Mullick • Edit: Nikon Basu • Art: Viraag Desai • Sound Design: Sukanta Majumdar • Music: Aniket Dutta • Cast: Joyraj Bhattacharjee (Promotho Nath Biswas), Soumyajit Majumdar (Bibhuti), Bidyut Das (Komol Mete), Jayanta Banerjee (Nibaran Chakraborty), Debleena Sen (The Lady from the other world) • Shooting Mode: Black & White, Colour • Language: Bengali • Country: India • Year: 2019 • Runtime: 98 minutes

english version below + Into the Gro(o)ve. “Ghost of the Golden Groves” / review Leonardo Persia: Voi siete un duo di filmaker.
