This was the most present adjective in the personal notes I took after watching the film. «La lisière » has a very unique sick atmosphere. Where did you start from to build this first full-length feature? What was the initial idea?

Géraldine Bajard: Years ago, I read a novel by the Japanese writer Mishima, it is the story of a young boy who discovers that his widowed mother has a new man in her life. The man is a captain and in the eyes of the 8 years old boy, he represents somehow the perfect Man. But one of the boy’s friends doubts the virtue of the captain. Months after, the captain has been invited to meet the young boy and his friends. The children ask him questions about his life as a captain and finally they offer him to drink tea. And that is where the story ends. In fact, we do understand that the kids are about to poison and to kill him.
The beauty of the narration, simple and therefore strong, and the cruelty of the story impressed me a lot. And that’s how I began to think about this peculiar energy one has during youth and childhood: An energy that can be very joyful but also quickly devastating.

Later – when I started to write the script of “La Lisière” – I was truly irritated by how youth was being stigmatized, sometimes even demonized, as being the uncontrollable devil behind all troubles in society. I began to do some research; talked to sociologists, psychologists specialized in the youngster’s uneasiness, with deep relational problems. I also wanted to understand why, on one side, we do have this strong fascination for youth, for staying young and on the other hand, we do treat the youth like a group that doesn’t belong to the social corps, to us, to our own evolution.
So, I did want to depict the morbid part of adolescence, but merely in order to show it as a symptom. A symptom that, at the end of the film, reveals more about the adult’s neurosis and their shadowy beings.

From the beginning, it was clear that the story would take place in a setting that is an isolated, sticky claustrophobic world. In which the adult characters behave like being on automatic pilot. Also because I had the strong feeling that the “western world” was about to shut doors, by overprotecting every single elements that constitutes its society. And this of course can lead to scary projections – to archaic behaviours.

Alessio Galbiati: “La Lisière”, “The Edge”… titles that, exactly like the movie, don’t work at a superficial level but seem an assonance, an idea, an atmosphere. “The edge” of what?

Géraldine Bajard: The edge in the sense of borderline. In French “La Lisière“ means this thin line/path that separates the woods from the fields. But the word has indeed a larger meaning: the edge of one’s identity, the in-between… In the film it had also a lot to do with falling/drowning into another state.
Most of the main characters are devoid of the idea of planning their actions. I tried to create (and direct) the interactions between the characters, more as if it was a choreography, where needs and deceptions make them react.
I don’t quite believe in causality in the chain of events, actions. Mostly, I see a knot of forces (in the sense of physics) that defines the human interactions.
To be able to act, one is often on the edge of his own state. It’s a bit like the process of being able to walk. You are only able to walk, to do one step after the other because you loose balance. So there is a lot in “La Lisière” about accepting to loose balance.
In some perspective the film rotates around the various declinations of the word. And in the middle of that: the character of François, the young doctor, who walks on a very thin line. Being an adult, he is caught in the spiral of the youngster’s games, i.e. the girls attraction to him or his confrontation with Claire, the unconscious rivalry with Cedric.

Visually, my D.oP., Josée Deshaies, and I wanted to work on a lightning that would translate this edgy atmosphere. Technically, this meant to play with these “edgy” levels of light: i.e. how dark could be darkness in the woods, how artificial or not would be the light, the light of the youngster’s flashlights in the woods. We wanted to try to get to the limits of what film material allows us to go.

Alessio Galbiati: The atmospheres in your film remind me of Lynch and Cronenberg. I’m thinking about films like “Blue Velvet” and “Spider”, or “The Village of the Damned” by Carpenter, just to name a few. What are your cinematic references, the ones that drove you in the process of writing and directing the film?

Géraldine Bajard: Certainly the films of Bresson and Buñuel had a big influence in my perception of cinema. “Au hasard Balthazar”, “El angel exterminator” are definitely important films.
But of course as you mentioned it, I am very fond of Cronenberg’s films, of some old horror movies (“The Village of the Damned”, “Carnival of Souls”, “The Wicker Man”, “The Twilight Zone”) for their way of pointing out certain realities, social uneasiness through the prism of fantasy. In La Lisière, I tried to work with some elements of an imagery derived from horror movies. I wanted to start from a so-called “realistic” perspective on the story, the characters; and slowly to let the film move to a threatening atmosphere. What we do recognize in the beginning as our world, may be people we could know, gets horrific in itself.
Also early films of Nagisa Oshima and, in general, films in which the storytelling is not a “conventional” one, accompanied me while preparing the film. I am deeply impressed by the films of Apichatpong Weerasethakul, by the visual, narrative freedom he shows in his works. For me filmmaking has to remain a source of many possibilities. And therefore I tend to be curious… and especially curious of how filmmaking allows many ways of depicting, telling stories. I admit, I don’t really believe in rules in storytelling, but more in the “vraisemblance” (Plausibility?). Some cultures have other ways of telling a story than we western people do, and still, they tell tense stories.

Alessio Galbiati: The location you chose has a very important role in the movie: it’s a claustrophobic microcosmos where your characters react to each other. How did you choose it and how did you modify it to make it meet your needs in the film?

Géraldine Bajard: To create the right geography was very important. And well, to find the right location was a very long and a difficult process. We had to face some sort of “restrictions”.
From the beginning I wanted an isolated residence with its little houses (that had partly still to be in construction) surrounded by woods and wide fields in the middle of a hilly landscape. So I saw a lot of residences in France, but the difficulty was that everything had to match, also because of economical and production questions.
At some point of the preparation, I was really desperate to find the right place, the one that would fit in the film’s geography. Also to be able to give the right setting to let my characters react to eachother.
Finally, three months before shooting, we thought we had found it. Unfortunately, the Real Estate Company (very similar to the VanX&Co Company in the film), the initiator of this place, didn’t give us permission. It didn’t suit to their politics. So we had to carry on with searching. We then found another place that is now one of the locations in the film. Strangely enough, while we were visiting it with the set designer, one of the inhabitants told us that all the houses (quite expensive ones – most of their owners are in financial depths) were built on an unstable ground. To us, it had something of being on shifting sands… but in high slowmotion.
He also told us that may be, in a few years, the houses would slowly fall apart. Suddenly, this place became so morbid. The team was shocked about the story. It revealed a lot about the Real Estate Business politics, because none of the buyers knew that before. I decided to shoot there.
Yet to maintain the coherence of the topography, we needed another location, residence. To create the unity (between the two locations) and the special “flair” of the Residence “Beauval Heights” (its name in the film), we decided to create our own streetlamps. I was very happy with this solution.
The statue was also created especially for the film. It was in the script right from the beginning. With the set designer we really worked very precisely on the conception of it.

Alessio Galbiati: Melvil Poupaud plays a thirty-something man devoid of emotions, incapable of showing his feelings and maybe to live them. How did you work in building this character and how did the actor help you in its construction?

Géraldine Bajard: I always wanted to depict a man who would be in the middle of needs and projections, as he is a stranger to a community, a village.
My grandparents used to live in the countryside, in a very small village near the town of Tours. In this village, there was no bakery, no market anymore, just a little train station. A young doctor from Paris (he was 32) had settled down nearby. He came once to my grandmother’s house, and told us about the difficulties of his job. Being the only doctor and replacing somehow the function of the priest, he described himself as being a listener of all sorrows and all needs. When we finally talked about his own wishes and needs in life, he didn’t know what to answer. He remained silent. Later, the memory of his words and reaction was a clue in building François character.
As you perfectly name it, the character is incapable of showing his feelings and to live them. This was essential in its building, especially in the confrontation with the group of youngsters. Unable of sharing his emotions, François has also a problem with distance and proximity, which is in my opinion, a very actual topic. He is unable of positioning himself, but also of letting people approach him.

I knew very early that Melvil Poupaud would be a perfect François. Melvil knew that the psychology would not work through biographical elements nor strange habits the doctor could have, but rather through the clash of moments, through a gesture rather than an externalised emotion. And so, we were able to work on creating this opaque character of François Renal. We also agreed on the necessity of a certain kind of humour, laconism.

For him and for me, it was important to find the right costume, to define François’ silhouette. It had to be simple, plausible for a doctor’s character, but also not too obviously anchored in our time, not too naturalistic. By that time, I had already chosen this very peculiar car, the fiat 130, which would be like the extension of François’ silhouette. As soon as we see the car, we see François.
We also talked about the atmosphere of “La Lisière” and what would be the general, special tone of the film, François’ slow disconnection from the world. It was more an exchange of anecdotes, feelings and suggestions than a “technical” preparation. I wanted him to slowly immerse himself in the world of Beauval Heights. It was a big chance for me to work with him. A great collaboration. Melvil is not only devoted to his part, he thinks and participates to support the whole process of the film. And on top of that, he has a great sense of cinema.

Alessio Galbiati: The feeling you get from watching the film is a great creative freedom, which doesn’t happen often in a director’s debut film. How was your relationship with both the production (Cinema Defacto) and the co-production companies (23/5 Filmproduktion)?

Géraldine Bajard: It was of course a struggle, especially in the process of writing. But to be honest, it is good to have to fight for the film you want to make; and it is no doubt that the dialogue with the producers (on both sides) helped me a lot to strengthen the “spinal column” of the film. So, even if at some point it was a struggle, it was definitely a positive one !
I must also admit, that I had the chance that both producers seemed to really trust me artistically. Which is quite unusual in the process of a first feature film. I was very lucky.

Alessio Galbiati: What kind of distribution will « La lisière » benefit from ? In what countries is it being released?

Géraldine Bajard: By now, we only have a distributor in Germany (RealFiction). I really hope the film will be shown in more countries.

August 24, 2010

Intervista alla regista Géraldine Bajard
di Alessio Galbiati

Alessio Galbiati: Morboso.

“The edge” of what?

Rimase in silenzio.

In quali paesi uscirà?

Il presente articolo è stato pubblicato su Rapporto Confidenziale numero28 (speciale 2010), pp. 38-41 all’interno di RC:speciale 63° Festival del film Locarno 4-14 | 8 | 2010 Géraldine Bajard, born in Switzerland, of French nationality, grew up in Saudi Arabia, Morocco, India and France.
