Actually quite some people link it to the atmosphere of that movie. During one of the test screenings, someone even suggested to baptise the film “re:Pulsar”. Speaking of Polanski, there’s definitely also a touch of “Le Locataire” (“The Tenant”, 1976) in the house. The appartment building where we shot the movie has this same kind of cour intérieur through which the appartements are visually and acoustically connected, making it very easy to keep on eye on the neighbours. The poor acoustic isolation of these old world appartments can create a weird, oppressive atmosphere, particularly at night. He has this intriguing mix of restlessness and imperturbality about him. Working with him is rather easy. He trusts in the ability of the camera and the film stock to pick up and magnify significant details. He’s the son of a classical, very respected theatre actor, Julien Schoenaerts. I’d love to see his face when I tell him it’s a telephone that also can make photos and record small films. Nowadays kids can’t imagine how the hell we were able to survive without cellphones. The film reflects my amazement at the rapidity with which communication technology evolves and the way it is dominating our lives. Behind this promise of making life simplier, bringing us closer together, giving us easy access to information a different, darker picture is appearing. Vital information can be hacked, your private life intruded and exposed. All these promising devices risk to make us more impatient, lonely, vulnerable and suspicious. By means of poetic antidote I smuggled a whole range of vintage, analogue information carriers in the movie, such as Polaroïd-pictures, vinyl records, cord phones, super 8 movies…

Roberto Rippa: You filmed “Pulsar” in 35mm. The different sound elements cooperate to draw you into Samuel’s restless state of mind. Just like Samuel, you become gradually more receptive to acoustic impulses, which can be loaded with menace but also with the promise of some kind of magic that might be about to happen. With Senjan, we worked a lot on finding the accurate sound for the voice mail messages, warning messages, hard disk noises and frequencies conjuring up electromagnetic waves. As I’m allergic to sound effects, we tried to blend the different hybrid sound elements into one naturalistic, true to life soundscape. With composer Guy Van Nueten, we took the time we needed to find the right sound, which came from a mix between acoustic and electronic instruments. The tension between the analogue and digital world that’s at the heart of the movie can be felt in the music too.

Roberto Rippa: Your film builds a very precise atmosphere.
