Reindeerspotting – Escape from Santaland

“Reindeerspotting” è un documentario su un gruppo di ragazzi dediti al consumo di varie droghe, tra leggere e pesanti, che vivono a Rovaniemi, nella Lapponia finlandese. Uno tra loro, Jani, ha perso cinque anni della sua vita e due dita a causa dei suoi creditori. Vorrebbe lasciarsi alle spalle la Lapponia e la sua vecchia vita. Una rapina in un supermercato che gli frutta 5’000 Euro è il suo passaporto per la fuga. Il documentarista Joonas Neuvonen, lo segue e filma da anni condividendo con lui la consuetudine per le droghe pesanti. Questa è la storia di Jani.
Documentario d’esordio per il finlandese Joonas Neuvonen che a Rovaniemi – capoluogo della Lapponia, 10 chilometri a sud del Circolo polare artico, temperatura media +0,2°C, superficie terrestre ricoperta di neve per 183 giorni all’anno – filma i suoi amici tossicodipendenti – particolarmente dediti al consumo di Subutex (sostitutivo del metadone nella cura della tossicodipendenza) – nella loro quotidianità fatta di consumo, furti e debiti con gli spacciatori locali.
Neuvonen che – come precisa un cartello all’inizio del documentario – condivide al tempo del documentario le abitudini dei suoi amici, non utilizza alcun artificio (né musica) per sottolineare o enfatizzare la drammaticità di quanto mostra e non arretra di fronte ad alcuna situazione realizzando un documento profondo, sincero, reale e multidimensionale, forse il più potente mai visto sull’argomento, seguendo in particolare modo il suo amico Jani, da una parte totalmente dipendente dalle droghe, eroina compresa, dall’altra impegnato a sognare un’esistenza fatta di pochi soldi, una moglie e una piccola casa con giardino, in una costante contraddizione che lo vedrà rinchiuso in galera a più riprese e per molti anni.
Potente, privo di qualsivoglia morale e sincero fino all’osso, “Reindeerspotting” (che ironizza sul titolo del film di Danny Boyle, anche per fare dichiaratamente incazzare produttori e governo finlandese, ma molto, molto distante dalla sua carineria) è un film da vedere assolutamente.
In Finlandia ha avuto circolazione con divieto ai minori. Un’assurdità.
Joonas Neuvonen
Joonas Neuvonen nasce a Rovaniemi, in Finlandia, nel 1979. Vive tra Edimburgo, Londra e San Francisco, dove frequenta corsi di fotografia. Tornato nella sua città natale, comincia a filmare la vita dei suoi amici più stretti, che finanziano la loro tossicodipendenza con furti e altri atti di delinquenza. Si trasferisce a Helsinki per studiare fotografia, grafica e regia di film documentari. Dopo un lungo lavoro di montaggio, durato cinque anni, termina nel 2010 il suo documentario d’esordio, “Reindeerspotting – Escape from Santaland”.

Roberto Rippa: What happened when the film came out in Finland?
Joonas Neuvonen: They gave it an X rating. So that you cannot watch it if you’re under 18.
Roberto Rippa: This is the rating usually used for porn…
Joonas Neuvonen: Yeah, that’s right! They gave it the same rating as porn.
Sadri Cetinkaya: Drug movies are usually under 16.
Joonas Neuvonen: Yeah, “Trainspotting” was 16 but maybe they saw it as pornography of needles’ injection. There’s injection in the veins and then pleasure coming from that. So maybe they saw it as pornography.
Sadri Cetinkaya: Maybe they felt that Jani’s lifestyle was so inviting that people could have started using drugs themselves.
Roberto Rippa: Which is stupid because this never happens in cinema. Cinema is not a way to invite people to do things, otherwise we wouldn’t have films with killers…
We imagine Finland as a free spirited country. What happened in this case?
Joonas Neuvonen: The censorship department that rates films said: “Well, this is a drug-positive film. It depicts drugs use in a positive way”. And obviously the producers wanted the film to be seen by people under 18. Who goes to see movies? This is a huge audience so they were losing money because people 15 to 18 years old couldn’t see the film. So it’s a commercial thing. So they turned it around and said: “This is an educational film, you cannot take drugs”. That pissed us off because we wanted to tell an individual story, we didn’t want to make a film to say: “Look at this guys, this is where you’ll end up if you take drugs!”. It only deals with people who have drug-related problems. And this is a completely different thing from people using drugs not having drug-related problems. So the film doesn’t really tell anything about drugs in general, it’s a personal story that says that you cannot escape from your issues. Wherever you go, they are going to follow you. Changing yourself is a long and hard work if the need comes from inside.
I really hated when they were trying to make it an educational film that says: “No, don’t take drugs” and all this bullshit.
