Si è tenuta fino a poco fa presso il Kodak Theatre di Los Angeles l’ottantaquattresima edizione della cerimonia degli Oscar. Cerimoniere per la nona volta Billy Crystal, che ha sostituito Eddie Murphy, dimissionario dopo che il produttore esecutivo Brett Ratner aveva dimissionato a sua volta in seguito alle polemiche scatenate da una sua battuta omofoba. A condurre la serata sarà Billy Crystal. Le nomination delle varie categorie sono state annunciate il 24 gennaio 2012 al Samuel Goldwyn Theatre di Los Angeles.

Il 19 febbraio scorso, il Los Angeles Times ha pubblicato in prima pagina un articolo a firma di John Horn, Nicole Sperling e Doug Smith che illustrava come il giurato medio dell’Academy che decide gli Oscar (wasp, maschio, 62enne) sia molto distante per caratteristiche dal frequentatore medio delle sale.
